3 Creative Ideas for Public Guidance at Amusement Parks

Last updated: August 17, 2012Perry Kuklin

Amusement parks are supposed to be -- amusing! That's why you look for every possible way to make the experience for your guests memorable, enjoyable, and safe.  Public guidance, which incorporates everything from wayfinding to queuing to crowd control, is a necessary part of amusement park operations but it can also be a source of creativity; a  contributor to the overall guest experience that can help bolster the perception of your brand.

Here are a few simple yet powerful public guidance ideas for amusement parks:

themed ropes crowd control

1. Themed Ropes & Belts

Some of the biggest "amusements" at an amusement park are the lines. It's what many visitors seem to talk about most (even more than the rides themselves) when remembering a trip to their favorite theme park. Since so much focus is placed on the waiting lines, why not make them more memorable (in a good way) by incorporating creativity. Turn your velvet ropes into candy canes for the holidays or match your rope to the ride's theme by making it look like wood, checkerboards, blocks, or just about anything else you can think of.  (If your velvet rope provider can't do this, just ask us! We can sublimate your velvet rope to match the theme of any ride or attraction.)

And those retractable belt posts? Those can also be customized with colors, imprints, and messaging to add interest to your attraction.

2. Extra Tall Banners

Try this on for size. An 8 foot tall post with a tall banner on it can capture attention and interest from miles around.  Well, maybe not miles but certainly from a good distance away.  Get creative with these tall signs and use them to announce new or updated rides, color code them to match areas on the amusement park map, match them to the theme of your ride or attraction, or create a sequence of creative messages that guide people from one point in the park to a featured destination of your choice.

3. Custom Merchandising Racks

There are plenty of opportunities to get creative at an amusement park. Last stop: The gift store or outdoor gift kiosk to purchase memorabilia for the trip. Have your merchandising slat walls powder coated with multi-color, strips or patterns to bring life and draw attention to an entire area. Not only is this a creative idea, it may also serve to drive more impulse sales as guests make their way through the busy aisles.
